The apocalyptic epic that remains unfinished after two decades
In short: In 1992, the creative team Clamp launched a high-stakes battle for the fate of humanity. Set in a doomed 1999 Tokyo, the series pits the Dragons of Heaven against the Dragons of Earth. Despite selling over 12 million copies, this iconic shojo epic has yet to reach its conclusion.
Premiering in Monthly Asuka in May 1992, X (also known as X/1999) is a seminal work by the manga group Clamp. The narrative follows Kamui Shiro, an esper returning to Tokyo after six years to fulfill a destiny that will decide the world's fate. The story is a complex foray into apocalyptic fiction, weaving together Christian eschatology, the Gaia theory, and modern environmental concerns. In this mythos, the Earth is viewed as a living organism, and the antagonistic Dragons of Earth seek to destroy civilization to allow the planet to heal from the 'plague of humanity.'
The series is notable for its massive scale and its ability to transcend its original shojo target audience through intense action. While designed for young women, its focus on conflict attracted many male readers. However, the creators faced significant editorial challenges. The graphic nature of the violence—including decapitation and the death of key characters—and the depiction of frequent earthquakes drew criticism from readers and editors, particularly due to real-world parallels like the Kobe child murders.
The manga's structure is famously incomplete. While it ran until a hiatus in March 2003, it has never reached its final chapter. This has led to multiple adaptations, including a 1996 feature film directed by Rintaro and a 24-episode television series in 2001, both produced by Studio Madhouse. Because the manga remains unfinished, these animated versions offer their own unique interpretations of the series' ultimate conclusion.
