Can a struggling manga assistant survive a world of predatory mutants?
In short: In Kengo Hanazawa's acclaimed series, a 35-year-old assistant named Hideo Suzuki finds himself a supporting character in a nightmare. When a disease called ZQN transforms humans into homicidal mutants, Hideo must navigate hallucinations and moral dilemmas to survive a world turned hostile.
Running in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits between April 2009 and February 2017, the story depicts Hideo Suzuki, an unstable manga assistant earning low wages while chasing failed dreams. His life is upended by the ZQN outbreak, a disease that turns people into zombie-like mutants driven by the instinct to devour humans. Armed with only a sporting shotgun, Hideo's journey becomes a desperate struggle for survival that eventually leads a small group of survivors toward Mt. Fuji. The protagonist's low self-esteem and constant frustration stem from his unfulfilled ambitions. His survival journey eventually involves a final trek to the summit of Mt. Fuji.
The series explores complex themes of identity and infection. While Hideo faces the physical threat of the ZQN, he also battles psychological challenges, including hallucinations and paranoia. The narrative features characters like Hayakari Hiromi, who retains her personality even after being infected, and the antagonist Kurusu, who leads a cult of disenfranchised youths. The story's reach extends beyond Japan, with spin-offs set in Osaka, Ibaraki, and Nagasaki, and an anthology featuring various manga artists. The plot includes a diverse range of spin-off stories located in different Japanese cities. Additionally, an anthology series showcases various artists' interpretations of the ZQN phenomenon.
The manga's impact has been significant, with over 8.3 million copies in circulation as of November 2021. The series received the 58th Shogakukan Manga Award (general category) during 2013 and earned three Manga Taishō nominations. Beyond the page, the story was adapted into a live-action film that premiered at the Sitges Film Festival in October 2015 and was released commercially in April 2016. The series has been licensed for English readers by Dark Horse Comics. Furthermore, some critics have even ranked it as the premier zombie manga ever written.
