From underdog Temple to Notre Dame's defensive architect
In short: Al Golden's coaching journey is defined by dramatic shifts, from reviving a struggling Temple program to leading Notre Dame's defense to a National Championship appearance. His career spans high-stakes collegiate rivalries, intense NCAA investigations, and a recent resurgence as a top-tier defensive coordinator.
Al Golden's coaching career is marked by significant transformations. After serving as a defensive coordinator at Virginia, where he helped improve the team's scoring defense from 74th to 17th in the nation between 2001 and 2004, he took over a struggling Temple program in 2005. At Temple, he turned a team with a 3–31 record into a program capable of winning seasons, including a 9–3 campaign in 2009.
His tenure at the University of Miami was more turbulent. Even with rosters containing several upcoming NFL draft selections, Golden dealt with hurdles such as voluntary bowl bans and inquiries regarding the program's connections to Nevin Shapiro. His time in Miami was also defined by a fierce rivalry with Florida State, whom he was unable to defeat in five attempts. Following a 58–0 loss to Clemson in 2015, Golden was dismissed from the position.
Golden has recently seen a major professional resurgence. After stints with the Detroit Lions and a return to the Cincinnati Bengals, he joined Notre Dame as defensive coordinator. In 2024, his leadership resulted in the Irish ranking as the #4 scoring defense in college football, a feat that helped propel the team to the National Championship Game and earned Golden the Broyles Award.
Throughout his career, Golden has maintained a distinct professional style, often choosing to wear dress shirts, slacks, and ties in his school colors on the sidelines, a departure from the standard coaching attire of his generation.
