The 2025 Michigan State Spartans: A season of historic highs and lows
In short: Jonathan Smith made history by starting his tenure with an undefeated streak, only to see the season unravel into a difficult stretch. The 2025 campaign serves as a dramatic case study in the volatility of collegiate football, ending in a swift coaching transition.
The 2025 season for the Michigan State Spartans was defined by a stark contrast in momentum. Under second-year head coach Jonathan Smith, the team opened the season with a victory over Youngstown State on September 3. This win established a new milestone for the program: Smith became the first head coach in Spartan history to begin his first two seasons with a 3–0 start. While participating in the NCAA Division I FBS season, the team played within the Big Ten Conference. These home contests took place at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan.
However, that early success proved fleeting. Following their initial wins, the Spartans suffered a grueling eight-game losing streak. They managed to secure a victory in the final game of the season, but the overall record remained a disappointing 4–8. In conference play, the team struggled significantly, finishing with a 1–8 record in the Big Ten Conference. The team faced off against several notable rivals during this period. Key matchups included games against Indiana, Michigan, and Penn State.
The rapid decline led to swift administrative action. On November 30, the university fired Jonathan Smith after only two seasons at the helm. The school moved quickly to find a successor, naming former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald as the new head coach to lead the program forward. The university sought a fresh direction following the dismissal. They selected Pat Fitzgerald, who previously led the Northwestern program, to take over the leadership role.
