In short: Jim Knowles has navigated a remarkable trajectory through the ranks of American college football. Once a head coach at Cornell, he has since become a master architect of elite defenses, commanding massive contracts and leading programs to the pinnacle of the sport.

Jim Knowles' coaching journey is defined by a transition from leading programs as a head coach to becoming one of the most sought-after defensive specialists in the country. After graduating from Cornell University in 1987, where he played as a defensive end, Knowles took the helm of the Cornell Big Red football program from 2004 to 2009. During his six-season tenure as head coach, he compiled a record of 26–34. Before his time as head coach, he gained experience as an assistant at Western Michigan University and the University of Mississippi. During his senior year at Cornell, he earned membership into the prestigious Sphinx Head Society.

His subsequent move into defensive coordination saw significant professional ascent. After stints at Duke and Oklahoma State, Knowles achieved national prominence at Ohio State. Under his leadership, the 2024 Buckeyes defense reached the top of the sport, ranking 1st in yards allowed, scoring defense, and red zone defense, ultimately contributing to a National Championship victory in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff format. His success at Oklahoma State was marked by a period of statistical growth, where the defense improved across several metrics for three consecutive seasons following an initial regression. This period of development saw the Cowboys' unit finish in the top ten for several categories, including sacks per game and opponent rushing yards per game.

The financial scale of Knowles' expertise became evident during his move to Penn State. Upon being introduced as defensive coordinator on February 4, 2025, he became the highest-paid assistant coach in college football. Although his time at Penn State ended following the firing of James Franklin, the university agreed to pay a portion of his $9 million buyout. Most recently, on December 11, 2025, Knowles accepted a three-year, $6.6 million deal to serve as the defensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee. He previously worked under head coach David Cutcliffe at both Duke and Ole Miss. His transition to Tennessee involved replacing Tim Banks as the program's defensive coordinator.
