In short: Tyrone Willingham’s coaching career was a study in extremes. He once became the only first-year head coach in Notre Dame history to win 10 games, yet he later presided over the first winless season in Washington football history in 119 years.

Born on December 30, 1953, Willingham’s career was marked by significant highs and lows across three major programs. After serving as an assistant at several institutions, including Michigan State and Stanford, he rose to prominence as the head coach at Stanford University from 1995 to 2001. While coaching, he guided the Cardinal to an unbeaten streak against rivals California and achieved the school's inaugural solo Pacific-10 Conference championship in 1999, the first in 29 years.

His move to the University of Notre Dame in 2002 began with unprecedented success, starting 8–0 and becoming the only first-year coach in the school's history to reach 10 wins. However, this momentum shifted dramatically. By the end of 2004, after a series of heavy losses—including a 44–13 defeat to USC—Willingham was terminated. His record at Notre Dame concluded with a 21–15 overall standing in South Bend.

Willingham’s final major role was at the University of Washington, where he was hired in 2004 to rehabilitate the program's image. While he achieved a notable upset over UCLA in 2006, his tenure was ultimately defined by struggle. In 2008, the Huskies suffered an 0–12 season, marking the program's first winless season in 119 years and the only one in the history of the PAC-10/PAC-12 era. He officially retired from coaching on July 18, 2010.

Throughout his career, Willingham was recognized for his character, receiving the Eddie Robinson Coach of Distinction Award in 2000 and various coach of the year honors in 2002. He also served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association Board of Trustees in 2008.
