How a Dallas bar and game parlor became a global entertainment empire
In short: What began in 1982 as a partnership between two Dallas entrepreneurs has evolved into a massive international brand. From the 'Million Dollar Midway' arcade to high-stakes corporate acquisitions, discover how Dave & Buster's redefined the intersection of dining and interactive social gaming.
The origins of Dave & Buster's trace back to 1982, when David Corriveau and James Corley opened their first location in Dallas. The venture was born from a proximity of interests: Corley had previously operated a bar called 'Buster's' next door to Corriveau's game parlor. This synergy of food and gaming became the foundation of their business model, which has since expanded across the United States, Canada, India, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Australia.
The company's growth has been marked by significant financial shifts and strategic moves. After being purchased by Edison Brothers Stores in 1989 to fund expansion, the company went public in 1995. In the early 2000s, the brand expanded by acquiring nine Jillian's locations following their bankruptcy filing in 2004. More recently, in April 2022, the company announced an $835 million acquisition of Main Event Entertainment, a family entertainment chain based in Plano, Texas.
Technological evolution has been central to the brand's operational efficiency. In 1997, the company introduced the 'Power Card,' a debit-style system designed to replace traditional tokens and tickets. This move was intended to reduce maintenance issues associated with coin-operated machines while encouraging longer play sessions. By 2015, the company upgraded to proximity card readers, and by 2020, customers could integrate their Power Cards into digital wallets like Apple Wallet and Google Pay through the DING DING DING app.
While the brand has seen massive success, it has also faced volatility. The COVID-19 pandemic caused same-store sales to plummet by 70% during fiscal year 2020. Additionally, the company's international expansion has seen mixed results; while they have successfully entered markets like India and the Philippines, their initial foray into the United Kingdom in 1998 resulted in the closure of both their Cribbs Causeway and Solihull locations.
