From theater snacks to national park gatekeeping: the expansive reach of Delaware North
In short: Headquartered in Buffalo, New York, Delaware North is a massive hospitality conglomerate that manages everything from airport dining and sports concessions to luxury resorts. Owned by the Jacobs family for three generations, the company has grown from a small concession business into a global entity with billions in annual revenue.
Founded in 1915 by brothers Marvin, Charles, and Louis Jacobs, the company began as a modest theater concession business. By the 1920s, the brothers pivoted to ballparks, effectively pioneering the sports concession industry. Over the decades, the firm diversified into gaming, airport hospitality, and park management. Today, it employs over 55,000 people worldwide and generates more than $3.2 billion in annual revenue. The company remains a family-run enterprise, currently led by chairman Jeremy Jacobs and his sons, who serve as co-CEOs.
The company's history is marked by both significant expansion and intense controversy. In 1972, the firm—then known as Emprise—faced federal racketeering charges related to Las Vegas hotel investments, leading Jeremy Jacobs to dissolve the entity and reorganize it as Delaware North. Later, in 1993, the company secured a major contract to manage visitor services at Yosemite National Park. This relationship eventually soured; after losing the contract in 2015, Delaware North claimed intellectual property rights over historic park names like the Ahwahnee Lodge. This dispute was settled in 2019 for $12 million.
Beyond parks, the company maintains a dominant presence in sports and travel. It owns the TD Garden in Boston and operates food services at over 50 major venues, including stadiums for the Detroit Tigers and various NFL teams. Its gaming division manages thousands of video gambling machines across North America. However, the company has faced scrutiny for its labor practices, including federal charges in 2020 related to union interference at its Yellowstone-area properties, and public criticism regarding its pandemic-era employee compensation policies compared to other sports franchise owners.
