Why this record-breaking roller coaster is named after a hornet's nest of rebellion
In short: Standing 325 feet tall, Fury 325 is a giga coaster that dominates the skyline of Charlotte, North Carolina. Inspired by the city's Revolutionary War moniker, the ride mimics the intensity of an angry hornet. Beyond its record-setting speed and height, the coaster has become a global benchmark for steel engineering.
Opened in March 2015 at Carowinds, Fury 325 was designed by Bolliger & Mabillard as the world's tallest giga coaster at the time. The ride reaches speeds of 95 mph and features a 325-foot lift hill, requiring FAA approval due to its proximity to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Its design includes a 320-foot drop and a layout that crosses the state line between North and South Carolina, reflecting the park's unique geography.
The coaster's theme draws from Charlotte's history as a 'hornet's nest of rebellion' during the American Revolution. This branding was carefully orchestrated, including a 2014 marketing campaign involving a beekeeper and a burnt bug net. The ride's aesthetic—teal tracks and white supports—complements this theme, while its technical performance has earned it consistent top rankings in the annual Golden Ticket Awards since 2016.
Despite its acclaim, the ride has faced structural challenges. In June 2023, a bystander identified a large crack in a support pillar, which was later attributed to unidirectional bending fatigue along a weld line. This discovery led to an extended closure for repairs and the implementation of enhanced safety protocols, including drone inspections. A subsequent foundation issue in July 2026 prompted further precautionary maintenance, underscoring the rigorous oversight required for such massive steel structures.
Today, Fury 325 remains a centerpiece of the park. It occupies approximately 8.4 acres and utilizes a three-train system with a theoretical capacity of 1,470 riders per hour. Whether it is the 'hive dive' through illuminated hexagons or the finale of camelback hills, the ride continues to be recognized as a premier steel coaster, blending historical narrative with high-speed engineering.
