The ambitious resort that never was: the $70 million dream of Carowinds
In short: In 1969, Carowinds was announced as a massive destination featuring hotels, a golf course, and even an NFL stadium. But a combination of construction delays and the 1973 oil crisis turned this grand vision into a more modest amusement park that straddles the North and South Carolina state line.
Conceived by Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall, the original vision for Carowinds was far more expansive than the 407-acre amusement park that exists today. The initial plan described a sprawling resort complex that would have integrated a theme park with a shopping center, hotels, a golf course, and a professional football stadium. However, the project faced significant hurdles; after ground was broken on May 1, 1970, numerous weather-related delays pushed the opening from April 1972 to March 31, 1973.
The park's early years were marked by both massive success and financial instability. While the first season attracted over 1.2 million visitors, the 1973 oil crisis curtailed attendance and forced the original developers to abandon the larger resort plans. In early 1975, Carowinds Corporation merged with Taft Broadcasting due to rising debt and declining attendance. This shift transitioned the park from a local investment consortium to a larger corporate entity, eventually leading to the introduction of beloved Hanna-Barbera characters and various new rides.
Over the decades, the park has undergone several identity shifts. In 1993, it became Paramount's Carowinds, incorporating movie themes like Wayne's World and Days of Thunder. Following the acquisition of Paramount Parks by Cedar Fair in 2006, the Paramount branding was phased out. Today, owned and operated by Six Flags, the park remains a major regional attraction, featuring the 27-acre Carolina Harbor water park and seasonal events like SCarowinds and WinterFest.
