In short: Cedar Point's Mean Streak was once a beloved wooden giant, but in 2016, it faced an uncertain future. Instead of demolition, the park chose a radical transformation. By merging old timber with modern steel, they created Steel Vengeance, a high-speed hybrid that shattered ten world records on its debut.

In 1991, Cedar Point opened Mean Streak, a wooden coaster built by Dinn Corporation. It was initially the world's tallest wooden ride, costing $7.5 million to construct. For over 25 years, it remained a staple of the park's Frontiertown section, though it eventually faced mechanical wear and a 2010 fire that damaged a small 5-foot section of the track. By 2016, the ride's future was unclear until the park announced a massive renovation project. The transformation was led by Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC). They utilized a technique of combining RMC's steel I-Box track with the existing wooden structure of Mean Streak. This resulted in the world's first "hyper-hybrid" coaster. When it reopened as Steel Vengeance on May 5, 2018, it boasted a 205-foot peak height and a top speed of 74 mph. The ride features four inversions, including zero-g rolls and a stall, and a 90-degree drop that plunges 200 feet. This engineering feat extended the track length to 5,740 feet and significantly increased the intensity of the experience. While the original Mean Streak offered a 3-minute and 13-second duration, the new hybrid completes a cycle in about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. After enduring some safety issues with falling objects and a small crash during its debut, this steel coaster was named 2018's Best New Ride by the Golden Ticket Awards.
