In short: For years, the British supermarket chain Iceland faced a bizarre legal battle with the actual country of Iceland. The sovereign nation accused the retailer of trademark abuse, leading to a high-stakes international dispute over whether a brand could own a country's identity.

In 2016, a formal legal dispute was initiated by the authorities of Iceland at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). They argued that the supermarket's trademark was "exceptionally broad and ambiguous," effectively harassing Icelandic companies and even their own tourism board by making it difficult for local firms to describe their products as being from Iceland. The nation pointed out that while the supermarket was founded in 1970, the country itself was established in 874.

The retailer had only acquired the Europe-wide trademark registration for "Iceland" in 2005. Despite this relatively recent acquisition, the chain's branding became a point of friction as it expanded across the continent. The dispute highlighted a classic tension in intellectual property: the rights of a commercial entity versus the cultural and geographical identity of a sovereign state.

The legal battle reached a definitive conclusion in April 2019 when the EUIPO invalidated the supermarket's trademark. This victory was officially welcomed by Iceland's minister for foreign affairs, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir. While the chain continues to operate under its name, it no longer holds the exclusive rights that once sparked such international diplomatic friction.

Beyond this naming dispute, the company has a complex history of expansion and retreat. It exited Ireland in 2005 due to financial difficulties, only to re-enter via franchise deals multiple times. Its footprint also includes unique partnerships, such as supplying food to "The Food Co." stores in Spain and Portugal, which serve large British communities abroad.
