The cocktail that built a billion-dollar spirits empire
In short: Sazerac Company is one of America's largest spirits giants, but its roots trace back to a single pharmacy on a New Orleans street. From a mid-1800s cocktail to a global portfolio of 300 brands, the company's journey is a masterclass in industrial scale and heritage branding.
The company's identity is inextricably linked to the Sazerac cocktail, which was created in the mid-1800s by Antoine Amédée Peychaud. In 1838, a pharmacy was run on New Orleans' Royal Street in the French Quarter by the immigrant Peychaud. This particular beverage gave its name to the Sazerac Coffee House, which opened in 1850. In 1869, Thomas H. Handy purchased the coffee house and began a trajectory of acquiring and marketing various liquor brands.
While the company is currently headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, it maintains a deep historical and operational presence in New Orleans, where it opened The Sazerac House museum and distillery in October 2019. The company's growth has been defined by aggressive acquisition. Since the 1980s, it has absorbed major brands like Fireball Cinnamon Whisky, Southern Comfort, and various bourbon labels from Seagram, Constellation Brands, and Beam Inc. This expansion transformed it into a powerhouse with an estimated annual revenue of $1 billion as of 2016.
Today, Sazerac operates nine distilleries and employs 2,000 people across 112 countries. Its strategy involves a mix of heritage preservation—such as producing Peychaud's Bitters—and modern expansion, including the recent 2024 acquisition of the ready-to-drink brand BuzzBallz and the 2025 purchase of Svedka vodka. By balancing the craft of the past with a massive global distribution network, Sazerac has secured its position as a dominant force in the American spirits market.
