Designing a garden that survives the unpredictable nature of an animal shelter

In short: Landscape designer Steve Warner and RSPCA staff are transforming a Sydney animal shelter into a functional, welcoming space. This project balances the needs of human visitors with the reality of an environment where plants face constant, unpredictable damage from the resident animals.

Located in Yagoona, the RSPCA head shelter presents a unique horticultural challenge. The design team must select vegetation capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic and the erratic behavior of animals, which may include trampling, chewing, or soil contamination.

To ensure durability, the team is testing specific resilient species. These include the hardy Fountain Grass, the robust Spiny-Head Mat Rush, the ground-covering Creeping Boobialla, and the sturdy Coastal Rosemary. These selections aim to maintain the landscape's integrity despite the high-impact setting.
