How to master the art of growing resilient alpine plants

Originating high in mountains above the treeline, alpines are built to endure harsh sun, strong winds, and thin, rocky soil. Because they are adapted to dry, rugged environments, they require gritty, free-draining soil and generally dislike consistently damp earth, particularly during winter. This makes them perfect for gravel gardens, containers, or rocky crevices.
When building a collection, look for a tapestry of textures and heights. You can combine cushion-like mounds with spreading clumps that cascade over walls, and mix evergreen foliage with deciduous varieties. To ensure year-round interest, select plants with diverse flower colors and different blooming seasons.
