How to design a garden that belongs to the landscape

In short: Most coastal gardening focuses on what we want, but true ecological design asks what the land needs. By prioritizing native flora and fauna, you can transform a challenging, windy site into a resilient sanctuary that thrives alongside the local ecosystem.

The philosophy of coastal gardening lies in symbiosis rather than imposition. For garden designer Peter Shaw and his wife Simone, building their dream home on a 1350sqm seaside site meant asking what the land required to bring birds back and maintain the beauty of the original landscape. Their award-winning garden, recognized in 2014 for its best use of plants, is anchored by the preservation of existing Stringybark trees (Eucalyptus obliqua) that were present when they first purchased the property.

Success in these environments requires selecting species capable of enduring salt-laden winds, extreme heat, and periods of drought. Effective choices often include plants with narrow, needle-like, or waxy leaves, such as White Correa, Lomandra longifolia, and various Poa species. For structural interest, the Shaws utilized the dramatic white, twisted trunks of Western Coolabahs (Eucalyptus victrix) and the architectural form of Gymea Lilies (Doryanthes excelsa). Even deciduous elements, like the Chinese Pistachio, can be used to provide summer shade and seasonal interest.

Managing the physical challenges of the coast is just as vital as plant selection. Because wind can rapidly dehydrate young specimens, using permeable windbreaks that filter rather than channel the breeze is essential. In areas with sandy or stony, free-during soil, adding organic conditioners like manure can aid establishment, though many Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and sage actually prefer the poor soil conditions found by the sea. By embracing local elements—such as locally-sourced pebbles or even salvaged artefacts—gardeners can create a cohesive aesthetic that respects the surrounding environment.
