From the world's tallest trees to your gin, the cypress family dominates the landscape.
In short: The Cupressaceae family is a global powerhouse of conifers, encompassing everything from the massive coast redwood to the humble juniper. These trees have conquered nearly every continent, shaping human history through timber, medicine, and culture, while hiding complex evolutionary secrets within their aromatic, terpene-rich wood and ancient, scale-like foliage.
The Cupressaceae family is a diverse group of conifers that includes 27 to 30 genera and roughly 130 to 140 species. These plants are remarkably resilient, occupying habitats ranging from arctic Norway to southernmost Chile. Their physical traits are distinct: many mature trees feature stringy, peeling bark and small, scale-like leaves, though some species retain needle-like foliage throughout their lives. While most are evergreen, a few genera, such as Taxodium and Metasequoia, are deciduous.
Evolutionarily, the family reached its peak diversity during the Mesozoic era. Molecular studies have clarified their lineage, leading to the inclusion of the former Taxodiaceae family within Cupressaceae. They are the sister group to the yew family, Taxaceae, with which they diverged during the early-mid Triassic. The oldest definitive record of the family is Austrohamia minuta, discovered in the Early Jurassic strata of Patagonia. Today, the family holds records for the world's largest tree, the giant sequoia, and the tallest, the coast redwood.
Beyond their ecological significance, these trees are deeply woven into human life. Their wood is prized for its durability and fragrance, serving as the primary material for pencils, furniture, and fenceposts. Culturally, they hold immense weight; the ahuehuete is the national tree of Mexico, while the coast redwood and giant sequoia are iconic symbols of California. Even our culinary experiences are touched by the family, as the fleshy cones of Juniperus communis provide the essential flavor for gin, and their oils are utilized in various medicinal and cosmetic applications.
