How designers turned a steep sandstone slope into a functional sanctuary
In short: Discover how landscape architects transformed a challenging, vertical site in Cammeray into a multi-level garden. This project demonstrates how to overcome severe soil depth restrictions and steep terrain through clever spatial planning and strategic planting.
Designers Barbara Landsberg and Cherith Piper tackled a small, steep sandstone site by creating distinct tranquil zones linked by a central boardwalk and a water feature. The project evolved from a simple repair of concrete stairs into a comprehensive modern Australian garden that utilizes every inch of the space, which is roughly the size of two double garages.
The design overcomes technical hurdles like load restrictions over a garage roof by selecting heat-loving plants with shallow roots. It replaces a 'desolate lawn' with tumbling native plants and incorporates diverse microclimates—ranging from full sun to deep shade under decks—using bold repetition and Corten steel screens to define the journey.
