How to transform a challenging steep block into a thriving, low-impact garden sanctuary

In short: Building on a steep battle-axe block requires clever engineering to manage water and terrain. By utilizing terracing, strategic drainage systems, and site-specific planting, you can turn difficult topography into a lush, functional landscape. Discover how one architect mastered these elements to dedicate 80% of his land to a vibrant garden.

When architect Andrew Boyne approached his steep battle-axe block, he faced a dual challenge: managing significant elevation changes and dealing with a high water table. His solution was to create three distinct terraces. This structural intervention served two purposes: it leveled the site for practical use and allowed for varied planting conditions. By raising the edges of these terraces, Boyne could cultivate arid species that would otherwise struggle in the saturated ground, effectively lifting them out of the water table.

Water management became the central theme of the design. Because the site sits in a summer-dry climate, the presence of fresh water is a blessing, but the high water level necessitated a robust drainage strategy. To prevent waterlogging, soak wells were installed around the property to collect rainfall. These wells do more than just dry out the soil; they act as a distribution system, pushing water through a creek network that feeds into a wetland. This system also powers a series of water features and waterfalls, integrating the site's hydrology into the aesthetic experience of the garden.

The planting strategy focuses on regional identity and environmental suitability. More than 200 Western Australian plant species were selected, organized into three distinct areas that represent different regions of the state. Notable specimens include the Verticordia grandis, which is showcased in a vertical concrete pipe for visibility from the home, alongside bull banksias and a Karri tree. By incorporating huge picture windows, the design ensures a seamless connection between the interior living space and the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the garden's role as a central component of the home's architecture.
