The secret to the success of 11,000 fern species lies in a single cell
In short: Leptosporangiate ferns dominate the fern world, comprising the vast majority of all living species. Their name reveals their unique evolutionary edge: unlike other ferns, their spore-producing structures develop from a single epidermal cell. This subtle biological distinction has allowed them to thrive across diverse environments, including as epiphytes.
The term leptosporangiate refers to the specific developmental origin of the sporangia, the structures that produce spores. While eusporangiate ferns develop sporangia from a group of cells, leptosporangiate ferns originate from just one. These mature sporangia possess a wall only one cell thick and often feature an annulus, a specialized ring that actively ejects spores into the environment. This group, formally known as the subclass Polypodiidae, represents the largest lineage of living ferns, with estimates suggesting around 10,323 to 11,000 species worldwide.
The classification of these plants has evolved significantly since Karl Ritter von Goebel first identified the group in 1881. Early systems often relied on morphological traits, which proved problematic for understanding evolutionary relationships. Modern molecular phylogenetics has since clarified these connections, grouping the subclass into seven orders and 44 families. While some critics argue that molecular studies provide a skewed perspective by overlooking the fossil record, these methods have largely succeeded in resolving relationships among families that were previously suspected to be polyphyletic.
The fossil record confirms the deep history of these plants, with families like the Dicksoniaceae appearing as early as the Lower Jurassic, between 201 and 175 million years ago. Today, the group is remarkably diverse, with nearly one-third of its species living as epiphytes. Recent classifications, such as those by the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group in 2016, place these ferns within the class Polypodiopsida, highlighting their status as a distinct and highly successful evolutionary lineage that continues to adapt and flourish across the globe.
