In short: Unlike their long-lasting winter cousins, summer squashes are harvested young while their skins remain tender. These rapid-growing, sun-loving plants offer a diverse array of shapes and colors, from patty-pans to crooknecks. Whether you have a sprawling garden or just a large container, these productive cucurbits thrive with the right care.

Summer squash, a category encompassing varieties of Cucurbita moschata, C. maxima, and C. pepo, are defined by their short storage life and early harvest. Unlike winter squashes, which are left to mature fully, summer varieties are picked while immature, resulting in thin, edible skins. This group includes familiar forms like courgettes, as well as distinct shapes such as acorn, patty-pan, and crookneck squashes. Botanically, these plants are closely related to pumpkins and belong to the cucurbit family.

Cultivation requires rich, moisture-retentive soil and abundant sunshine. Gardeners can choose between vigorous trailing vines that spread for several metres or compact bush varieties that occupy about one square metre. For those with limited space, smaller varieties can even flourish in containers at least 45cm wide. To ensure a reliable crop, experts recommend selecting varieties with an Award of Garden Merit, such as the yellow-skinned 'Sunburst' patty-pan.

Starting seeds indoors between mid- and late April provides a head start, protecting tender seedlings from late frosts and ensuring a longer growing season. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly outdoors in late May or early June once the soil has warmed. Regardless of the method, these plants are thirsty; regular watering is essential, particularly during fruiting, to prevent issues like powdery mildew. By focusing water directly at the roots—perhaps by sinking a pot into the soil—gardeners can maintain the moisture these productive plants crave throughout the summer months.
