The 40-tonne rock that created a permanent waterfall
In short: In the steep hills of Leura, a weekend retreat features a landscape so seamless it feels ancient. One of its most striking features is a cascading waterfall and pool, engineered by damming a natural watercourse with a single massive boulder designed to look like it has always been there.
Established in the 1930s as a retreat for Belgian entrepreneur Henri Van de Velde, Everglades House & Gardens serves as a masterclass in terraced landscape architecture. Located in Leura on Dharug and Gundungurra Country, the site sits approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. This elevation creates a cool temperate climate significantly cooler than coastal Sydney, allowing for a diverse collection of old-world cold climate plants that would struggle elsewhere.
The garden was designed by Paul Sorenson, whose work at this site remains his most recognized achievement among hundreds of designs. Sorenson utilized the steep terrain to create distinct zones, including an alpine area and various walking paths. His influence is particularly evident in a naturalistic section featuring maples and a meandering stream, which he developed after drawing inspiration from Japanese garden aesthetics.
The engineering of the site balances heavy masonry with organic flow. It features beautifully crafted stone walls and a reflection pool that complement the rugged scenery. The centerpiece—the waterfall into a pool—was achieved by damming a natural waterway with a 40-tonne rock. This specific choice highlights a sophisticated design principle: using massive, singular elements to create the illusion of untouched nature while providing structured, aesthetic beauty.
Today, managed by the National Trust NSW under head gardener Simon Cooper, the gardens provide seasonal interest through cherry blossoms, tulips, and autumn colors. It stands as a testament to early 20th-century garden design, where exotic and native species were integrated into a dramatic, multi-leveled hillside setting.
