From Alabama to Georgia: The evolution of a hockey franchise
In short: The Atlanta Gladiators did not begin in Georgia. Their journey represents a complex study in sports survival, moving from a struggling Alabama market to a multi-layered identity. This transition involved navigating declining attendance, rebranding to capture larger metropolitan areas, and managing a rotating door of professional hockey affiliations.
The franchise's roots date back to 1995 in Mobile, Alabama, where they competed as the Mobile Mysticks. However, declining attendance forced the team to suspend operations in 2002. After a year of dormancy, owner Toby Jeffreys relocated the team to Gwinnett County, Georgia, in 2003. Rebranded as the Gwinnett Gladiators, the team sought a new life in the ECHL, eventually moving their home base to Gas South Arena, located roughly 22 miles northeast of Atlanta. During their initial years in Alabama, the team played from 1995 until their 2002 hiatus. The move to Georgia involved selling minority shares to local businesses to form Gwinnett County Hockey, LLC. This transition allowed the club to establish a permanent home in the South Division of the ECHL's Eastern Conference.
The team's identity has been fluid, shifting to the Atlanta Gladiators in 2015 to capture a broader metropolitan market. This rebranding included updated primary and wordmark logos while maintaining the original team colors. The franchise has also navigated complex professional affiliations, serving as an affiliate for the Atlanta Thrashers, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, Arizona Coyotes, and most recently, the Nashville Predators. The franchise reached the Kelly Cup finals in 2006, where they lost to the Alaska Aces in a five-game series. They also won the South Division and American Conference titles that same year. The group swapped their main hues for navy blue and gold, replacing garnet and black during 2019.
The organization has seen significant leadership turnover, including six head coaches in its history. Notable figures include Jeff Pyle, who served as head coach multiple times, and Andy Brandt, who led the team as an interim coach before being named the permanent head coach in 2015. In 2022, ownership shifted to ATL Hockey Group, LLC, led by Alex Campbell, signaling a new era for the club's management and community engagement. The club took a voluntary hiatus during the 2020–21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the team even planned a one-game tribute to the former Atlanta Thrashers. Most recently, Matt Ginn was named the seventh head coach in the franchise's history in May 2025.
