In short: Bob Probert was more than a brawler; he was a physical deterrent whose presence dictated the flow of the game. While his career was marred by legal troubles and substance abuse, he remains a legendary figure for his role as a teammate's shield and a symbol of hockey's most violent era.

Bob Probert reached the pinnacle of his career during the 1987–88 season with the Detroit Red Wings. During that period, he amassed 398 penalty minutes to lead the league, marking the sixth most points of this type for one season ever recorded in the NHL. Beyond the statistics, Probert served as a primary protector for captain Steve Yzerman. He famously sucker-punched Buffalo Sabres enforcer Kevin Maguire in 1987 after Maguire attacked Yzerman, establishing his reputation as a man who would prioritize teammate safety over personal risk.

His career was defined by high-profile rivalries and physical feats. He engaged in a career-spanning series of battles with Tie Domi, whose famous 'belt' gesture originated from their confrontations. Probert also faced off against figures like Wendel Clark and Stu Grimson. One notable display of his dominance occurred in 1999 when he nearly knocked out an aspiring enforcer who challenged him, landing four right hands without throwing a single punch of his own. He even achieved a rare feat by fighting Jody Shelley in all three periods of a single match in 2002.

However, Probert's legacy is complex, shadowed by significant off-ice issues. In 1989, he served federal prison time for cocaine possession and faced an indefinite NHL suspension. A 1994 motorcycle crash involving high blood alcohol levels led the Red Wings to end their long-term investment in him. Despite these struggles, Probert was noted for his community work, including mentoring a young fan toward sobriety—a man who remained sober for over 23 years as of 2011. He finished his career with 3,300 penalty minutes, ranking fourth on the NHL's all-time list.

Probert's story is one of duality: a feared 'Bruise Brother' and a community figure who eventually sought reconciliation with the Red Wings organization in his final years.
