How a professional hockey team in Texas rose from the ashes of an Iowa franchise
In short: The Texas Stars are a professional hockey team based in Cedar Park, serving as the primary development affiliate for the NHL's Dallas Stars. Their journey from a provisional franchise to a Calder Cup champion reveals the complex mechanics of sports ownership, player development, and the high-stakes world of professional hockey.
The origin of the Texas Stars is rooted in the dissolution of the Iowa Stars. In April 2008, the Iowa franchise ended its affiliation with Dallas, briefly rebranding as the Chops. By April 2009, the American Hockey League granted a provisional Austin-area franchise to Tom Hicks, the owner of the NHL's Dallas Stars, provided he acquired an existing AHL franchise within a year. This condition was fulfilled on May 4, 2010, when the ownership group purchased the suspended Iowa Chops franchise, effectively establishing the Texas Stars.
The team found immediate success in its inaugural season. After finishing second in the West Division, they secured the Robert W. Clarke Trophy as Western Conference champions before falling to Hershey in the 2010 Calder Cup Finals. The team reached the pinnacle of the league in 2014, winning the Calder Cup by defeating the St. John's IceCaps. That same year, the team was purchased by Tom Gaglardi’s ownership group, aligning the AHL affiliate directly under the control of the parent club.
The franchise has served as a critical pipeline for talent, with coaches like Willie Desjardins and Derek Laxdal moving on to NHL roles. The 2023-24 season highlighted the individual success of Mavrik Bourque, who earned the league’s MVP award as the top scorer with 77 points. Following the 2024-25 season, head coach Neil Graham was promoted to the Dallas Stars, with former player Toby Petersen taking the helm. The team continues to evolve, having updated its branding in 2015 to mirror the identity of the Dallas Stars.
