Is the BEL 20 a financial index or a biological breakthrough?
In short: In the world of high finance, the BEL 20 tracks Belgium's most liquid stocks. But in the realm of molecular biology, BEL 20 refers to something entirely different: a natural ketone compound showing promise in treating pulmonary hypertension.
The term BEL 20 is most commonly recognized as the benchmark stock market index for Euronext Brussels. It tracks between 10 and 20 of the most capitalized and liquid companies traded on the Brussels Stock Exchange. Since June 20, 2011, the index has consistently maintained 20 listings, though it saw a brief one-month fluctuation in mid-2018 when Ablynx was replaced by arGEN-X following a takeover by Sanofi. The index's historical peak occurred in May 2007. Its current composition is updated annually based on specific market criteria.
The index is managed through an annual review process. Based on closing prices from the last Friday in February, new constituents are added or removed, with changes becoming effective after the third Friday of March. To qualify, a company must be representative of the Belgian equity market and maintain a free float of at least 15%. Furthermore, a candidate's free float market capitalization must be at least 300,000 times the index price on the last trading day of December. To remain an active constituent, a firm must possess a market cap of at least 200,000 times the index value. Within the index, individual company weights are capped at 15%.
In a completely different scientific context, researchers are investigating Bellidifolin (BEL) for its impact on pulmonary hypertension (PH). This progressive disease compromises right ventricular function through pulmonary arterial constriction and remodeling. Recent studies suggest that BEL, a natural ketone compound, may inhibit the proliferation and migration of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells. By potentially targeting the Igfbp5-mediated PI3K-AKT-mTOR pathway, BEL shows potential in reducing the pathological remodeling associated with the disease. Experiments using wire myography demonstrated that this compound inhibits contraction responses in pulmonary arterial rings. It specifically suppresses constriction triggered by extracellular calcium influx.
