In short: Invertebrates are often trapped by their own armor, forced to molt to grow. But the endoskeleton offers a different evolutionary strategy: a centralized, internal frame that supports massive body sizes and complex, heavy muscle architectures without the weight of a shell.

The fundamental advantage of an endoskeleton—a structural frame located inside the body—is its ability to support much larger organisms. Unlike an exoskeleton, which acts as a 'flesh-in-bone' container that restricts internal volume, the endoskeleton follows a 'flesh-over-bone' design. This allows the body's overall volume to be limited only by the weight of the soft tissues it can support, rather than the capacity of a rigid shell. This efficiency also enables more compact, centralized structures that are easier for the circulatory system to oxygenate and maintain.

In mammals, this internal system has undergone significant specialization. The skeletal structure is divided into the axial portion, which protects the central nervous and respiratory systems, and the appendicular portion, comprising the limbs and girdles. Mammalian bone formation, or ossification, features a unique advantage: secondary centers of ossification, known as epiphyses, develop at the ends of long bones. This ensures that joints have strong, mature surfaces even before the skeleton has finished growing, a process known as determinate growth.

Evolution has also repurposed ancient structures for new sensory roles. The mammalian middle ear contains three tiny bones—the malleus, incus, and stapes—which act as levers to amplify sound. Remarkably, these were once part of the reptilian jaw. The incus and malleus were derived from the quadrate and articular bones, respectively. By migrating from the jaw to the ear, these elements increased the mechanical efficiency of hearing, demonstrating how the endoskeleton can be remodeled to meet new environmental demands.
