The 'Western Import' Myth: How Homosexuality Was Integrated Into Global History
In short: For centuries, many have argued that homophobia is a modern Western export. However, historical evidence reveals a complex global tapestry where same-sex relationships were often integrated into religious codes, royal courts, and indigenous social structures long before modern
While contemporary debates often frame LGBTQ+ rights as a Western phenomenon, historical records suggest that same-sex relationships have been documented globally for millennia. In East Asia, same-sex love has been recorded since the earliest history, with Chinese literature documenting anecdotes of men in relationships as far back as the Spring and Autumn Era. Similarly, in Japan, the traditions of shudo and nanshoku were documented for over a thousand years, often linked to Buddhist monastic life and samurai traditions.
In South Asia, records of homosexuality date back to at least 1200 BC. Hindu medical texts from this period attempted to explain homosexual acts in a neutral, scientific manner. Additionally, a 'third sex' was recognised by the Laws of Manu, encompassing individuals who participated in homosexual acts or non-conforming gender roles. Around 200 AD, the Kama Sutra detailed fellatio methods and observed that certain 'third-sex' people entered into marriages based on 'complete faith.'
Indigenous societies in the Americas also held respected ceremonial and social roles for gender-nonconforming individuals prior to European colonization. These roles persisted in many contemporary communities, though the modern term "Two-Spirit" (adopted in 1990) remains a point of contention for some traditional groups who prefer their own specific cultural terms. In contrast, Spanish conquerors attempted to violently suppress these practices, subjecting native individuals to public execution and other severe penalties.
The shift toward pathologizing these behaviors is a more recent historical development. In the 19th century, the Enlightenment trend began using science to frame moral transgressions as medical issues. In China, for example, homophobia was notably imported alongside Western science and philosophy during the Self-Strengthening Movement. This highlights a recurring historical cycle: the movement from social integration or religious tolerance to systematic repression through legal and psychiatric mechanisms.
