The Texas highway that became a literal killing field
In short: Interstate 45 is the only primary Interstate Highway entirely contained within a single state. But beyond its unique geography, the stretch of road between Harris and Galveston County earned a grim nickname: the Texas Killing Fields, where over 30 bodies have been discovered.
While I-45 is a major artery connecting Dallas and Houston, it holds a distinct place in American infrastructure as the shortest primary Interstate with a number ending in 5. Spanning 284.91 miles, it is the only primary Interstate route that exists entirely within the borders of Texas.
The highway's history is rooted in the transition from rail to rubber. The Gulf Freeway section, which connects Houston to Galveston, was the first freeway built in Texas. The site occupied the old Galveston–Houston Electric Railway route, a line that shut down during 1936. This transition began in earnest in the 1940s, with the first freeway dedication occurring on September 30, 1948, at an overpass near the University of Houston.
Despite its role as a vital economic corridor, the highway has faced significant scrutiny. Beyond the 'Texas Killing Fields' notoriety—a name given to the marshy land between Harris and Galveston County due to the discovery of over 30 bodies—the road is currently the subject of a federal investigation. A proposed expansion in Harris County, estimated to cost at least $9.7 billion, faces intense local opposition due to concerns over air quality and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
The route also serves as a case study in infrastructure limits. During Hurricane Rita in 2005, the freeway became a massive parking lot as thousands of evacuees jammed the roadway. Despite the implementation of contraflow lane reversals, the traffic remained stagnant for hours, illustrating the challenges of managing high-volume evacuation routes in the face of natural disasters.
