Interstate 10 is a 2,460-mile artery connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic coast.
In short: As the southernmost transcontinental highway in the United States, Interstate 10 spans from Santa Monica to Jacksonville. It is a complex engineering feat that includes one of the world's widest freeways, bridges over swamps, and critical hurricane evacuation routes, serving as a vital backbone for American travel and commerce.
Planned in 1956 as part of the original Interstate Highway network, I-10 was finally completed in 1990. Stretching 2,460.34 miles, it is the fourth-longest interstate in the country. Texas contains the largest share of the route, accounting for approximately 36 percent of its total length. The highway serves as a vital corridor, connecting major metropolitan hubs like Los Angeles, Houston, New Orleans, and Phoenix.
The infrastructure of I-10 is remarkably diverse, reflecting the varied geography it traverses. In Houston, the Katy Freeway section has expanded to include as many as 18 main and managed lanes, making it one of the widest freeways globally. Conversely, the route includes the 18-mile Atchafalaya Swamp Freeway in Louisiana and the George Wallace Tunnel beneath the Mobile River in Alabama. In Arizona, the highway reaches its highest elevation, briefly crossing 5,000 feet above sea level west of Willcox.
Beyond its role in daily transit, I-10 is a critical component of disaster management. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Twin Span Bridge near New Orleans required massive federal reconstruction. States like Florida and Louisiana continue to prioritize widening projects specifically to enhance hurricane evacuation capacity. These efforts highlight the highway's dual identity as both a commercial artery and a lifeline during regional emergencies.
The highway is also a tapestry of local history and naming conventions. Segments carry diverse titles, such as the Santa Monica Freeway, the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway, and the Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway. Some designations have shifted over time; for instance, the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway sign in Santa Monica was removed in 2022 following years of advocacy by Native American groups. These names reflect the evolving cultural landscape through which this massive infrastructure project passes.
