In short: In 1978, the Nissan Fairlady Z underwent a radical evolution. Moving away from raw, overtly sporting performance, the new S130 generation prioritized driver comfort, refinement, and aerodynamics. This redesign turned a pure sports car into a sophisticated grand tourer, trading aggressive acceleration for a smoother, more polished driving experience.

The S130, produced from 1978 to 1983, represented a significant departure from its predecessor. While it retained the L28 inline-six engine, the vehicle was redesigned to be much softer and heavier, focusing on luxury through improved sound insulation, more comfortable seating, and high-end audio systems. This shift in philosophy transformed the Z-car from a focused sports car into a grand tourer, particularly in the plush Grand Luxury versions.

Aerodynamics played a crucial role in this redesign. Nissan decreased the lift coefficient from 0.41 to 0.14 and the drag coefficient from 0.467 to 0.385 by sealing the original model's grille and using wind-tunnel testing. This improved high-speed stability and fuel economy, addressing known issues from the earlier models. Both the 2+2 and two-seater versions benefited from a lower centre of gravity and achieved almost 50/50 weight distribution.

Performance metrics during this era were often misunderstood due to changing industry standards. While the early 1979 models were rated at 135 hp (101 kW), they actually suffered from slower acceleration than the 240Z due to increased weight, taller gearing, and emissions controls. It was not until the 1981 introduction of the 280ZX Turbo—the first turbocharged production Japanese automobile—that the performance deficit was addressed. The turbo model, featuring an Airesearch turbocharger, produced 187 hp (147 kW) and offered significantly improved acceleration, making it the fastest Japanese import on the American market at its release.

The S130 also served as a transitional vehicle for Nissan's global branding. In North America and Australia, it was marketed as the Datsun 280ZX, often featuring the 'Datsun by Nissan' co-branding during the late 1970s as the company phased in its new global identity.
