In short: Unveiled in 2019, the Nissan Ariya was designed to redefine the electric crossover. Despite facing global chip shortages that delayed its 2022 launch, this compact SUV has evolved from a sleek concept into a sophisticated vehicle featuring advanced driver assistance and high-performance Nismo variants.

The Ariya represents Nissan's first foray into the zero-emissions compact crossover SUV segment. Its design lineage traces back to the 2017 Nissan IMx Concept, which was later refined into the Ariya Concept unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. While the production version was revealed in July 2020, the global semiconductor shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its market entry from the originally intended 2021 release to 2022. The design's aesthetic elements were inspired by the third-generation Leaf. This evolution reflects Nissan's commitment to modernising its electric lineup.

The vehicle offers significant customization through its battery and drivetrain options. Standard models feature either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, utilizing either a 63 kWh or an 87 kWh battery. Launched in January 2024, the Ariya Nismo provides enhanced performance; specifically, the B9 e-4ORCE model features a 91 kWh battery and delivers up to 320 kW (435 PS; 429 hp). The high-performance B6 e-4ORCE variant offers a 66 kWh battery and 270 kW output. This model ensures variety within the Nismo performance range.

Technological sophistication is central to the Ariya's identity. It features the Safety Shield 360 system and the ProPilot driver assist system, with the advanced ProPilot 2.0 capable of hands-free driving under specific conditions. Looking toward the future, a facelifted version for the 2026 model year was previewed in late 2025, introducing a grille-less front end and a Google-powered infotainment system, though tariffs have prevented this specific update from reaching the United States market. The updated model also removes the fog lights. This change contributes to the vehicle's streamlined appearance.
