How a tax shift in Thailand delayed the launch of the Nissan Terra
In short: Originally planned for a 2016 release, the Nissan Terra faced significant setbacks. Beyond intense competition from rivals like Toyota and Ford, a new Thai tax structure based on emissions forced a major redesign. This regulatory pressure required a cleaner engine, ultimately delaying the SUV's official debut by two years.
The development of the Nissan Terra was a complex process shaped by shifting market demands and strict environmental regulations. While Nissan initially planned to launch the SUV in 2016, several constraints pushed the timeline back. One significant factor was the competitive landscape; by 2015, major rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Ford Everest had already released new generations, forcing Nissan to refine the Terra's details to remain competitive. Nissan executives originally targeted the Middle East and China for this model. This strategic focus was part of the early development phase.
A critical turning point occurred due to the Thai government's introduction of a new excise tax structure based on emissions. To qualify for a 5% tax incentive, vehicles had to stay below a 200 g/km CO2 limit. This regulatory pressure forced Nissan to engineer the cleaner YS23DDTT 2.3-liter diesel engine, specifically designed to produce 196 g/km of CO2. This engineering requirement was a primary driver behind the two-year delay in the vehicle's release.
The resulting vehicle, which was officially revealed on 15 March 2018, sits between the compact X-Trail/Rogue and the full-size Patrol/Armada. While it shares certain components with the D23 Navara, such as the front door panels and hood, the chassis and suspension were re-engineered to be shorter to improve maneuverability and comfort. Today, the Terra's legacy continues through various regional iterations, including the Dongfeng Paladin in China and the X-Terra in GCC markets. The vehicle's ground clearance is set at 225 mm. It is also available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission.
