How a Japanese workhorse became a high-risk American fire hazard
In short: The Nissan Vanette was engineered for utility, not luxury. But when it was modified to compete in the US minivan market, technical compromises turned a reliable cargo van into a vehicle so prone to engine fires that Nissan eventually recalled every single unit ever sold in the country.
The Nissan Vanette first appeared as a cab-over design, a layout intended to maximize cargo space by placing the driver's cabin over the engine. This allowed for longer storage areas without increasing the vehicle's exterior footprint. By 1978, it became a staple of Japanese and international markets, offered in various configurations including trucks, passenger vans, and nine-seat coaches. It was built on the foundations of the Sunny line, sharing engines and transmissions to keep production costs low for commercial use.
The vehicle's trajectory shifted significantly when Nissan attempted to enter the North American minivan segment in 1987. To compete with larger models like Chrysler's minivans, engineers modified the C22 Vanette to house a much larger 2.4-liter Z24i engine. However, because the van was not originally designed for such a high-displacement powerplant, the resulting cramped engine bay led to severe overheating and recurring engine fires.
Despite reports of fires beginning in 1987, Nissan did not take decisive action for years. Following a legal action by a class, the firm performed the unique act of retrieving each Nissan Van marketed across America during 1994. By then, at least 135 fires had been reported. While no deaths or injuries occurred, the move was criticized as a delayed response to known defects. The vans were eventually crushed en masse and replaced by the Nissan Quest.
While it faced safety controversies in the US, the Vanette remained a production powerhouse elsewhere. In Malaysia, the C22 model saw an extraordinary 13-year run from 1997 to 2010, becoming the country's longest-running vehicle model. It continued to serve as a reliable workhorse with its original 1980s interior and body profile long after it had been retired or replaced in other global markets.
