Combination therapy improves survival outcomes in advanced renal-cell carcinoma
In short: In a phase 3 randomized trial of 651 adults, researchers found that combining nivolumab and cabozantinib significantly extended progression-free survival compared to sunitinib for those with previously untreated, advanced clear-cell renal-cell carcinoma. The combination therapy also showed higher rates of tumor response and better reported health-related quality of life.
The study compared the combination of nivolumab and cabozantinib against sunitinib in a randomized, open-label design. While the results showed significant benefits in survival and response rates, the trial was open-label, meaning both patients and clinicians knew which treatment was being administered.
The researchers observed a median progression-free survival of 16.6 months for the combination group versus 8.3 months for the sunitinib group.
Why it matters: A new combination therapy offers superior survival and response benefits for advanced renal-cell carcinoma patients.
