In short: A 68-week clinical trial of 338 adults with overweight or obesity found that weekly subcutaneous semaglutide injections resulted in significantly more weight loss than daily liraglutide injections. When paired with diet and physical activity, participants using semaglutide experienced a mean weight reduction of 15.8%, compared to a 6.4% reduction in the liraglutide group.

In this randomized, open-label trial, researchers compared the efficacy of 2.4 mg weekly semaglutide against 3.0 mg daily liraglutide. The study also found that semaglutide users had much higher odds of reaching weight loss milestones of 10%, 15%, and 20%. However, the trial was open-label, meaning participants and researchers knew which treatment was being administered.

Why it matters: Weekly semaglutide appears more effective for weight loss than daily liraglutide in this clinical trial.
