Early antibody treatment significantly reduces hospitalization and death in high-risk Covid-19 patients
In short: A phase 3 clinical trial found that the monoclonal antibody sotrovimab significantly lowered the risk of severe disease progression in high-risk patients with symptomatic Covid-19. Researchers observed that patients receiving the antibody early in their illness were much less likely to require hospitalization or die within 29 days compared to those given a placebo.
The study aimed to determine if sotrovimab could prevent Covid-19 from worsening in older adults or those with underlying conditions. By comparing 291 patients receiving the antibody to 292 receiving a placebo, the team found an 85% relative risk reduction in severe outcomes.
The trial was a double-blind, multicenter study involving nonhospitalized patients within five days of symptom onset. A limitation of this specific finding is that it represents a prespecified interim analysis of an ongoing trial.
Why it matters: Early antibody treatment can be an effective tool for preventing severe outcomes in vulnerable populations with Covid-19.
