Oral antiviral molnupiravir reduces hospitalization and death risk for high-risk Covid-19 patients
In short: A phase 3, double-blind, randomized trial of 1,433 unvaccinated adults with mild-to-moderate Covid-19 found that the oral antiviral molnupiravir significantly lowered the risk of hospitalization or death. Participants who received the drug within five days of symptom onset showed a lower incidence of severe outcomes compared to those receiving a placebo.
The study aimed to evaluate how effectively molnupiravir could prevent disease progression in patients with at least one risk factor for severe illness. The results showed that the treatment reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by approximately 3 percentage points among all randomized participants.
While the drug was effective overall, some subgroups—including those with previous infections or diabetes—showed mixed results where the benefit was less clear. A primary limitation of this study is that it only included unvaccinated individuals.
Why it matters: Early antiviral treatment can help prevent severe outcomes for high-risk patients who develop mild-to-moderate Covid-19.
