Salmonella can turn your stomach into a battlefield

Salmonella Infections - Salmonellosis, Animation · 5:23 · Video: Alila Medical Media · Watch at the source

In short: Salmonella infections start in the gut, but they can spread to your blood and organs, causing fever, diarrhea, and even death. This animation explains how these bacteria invade your body, why they’re so dangerous, and how they’re passed from animals to humans.

Salmonella infections, or salmonellosis, are caused by bacteria that can survive in both oxygen-rich and oxygen-free environments. These Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria are divided into two species: *S. enterica* and *S. bongori*. *S. enterica* is further split into six subspecies, with the most common being the non-typhoidal serotypes that cause gastroenteritis and the typhoidal serotypes that lead to severe enteric fevers like typhoid fever.

Salmonella spreads through the oral-fecal route, often via contaminated food or water. Common sources include undercooked meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy, and fresh produce. To endure the stomach's acidic conditions, the bacteria require a significant intake. Once in the intestines, they invade intestinal cells, triggering inflammation and symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. In severe cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to bacteremia and infections in other organs.

Non-typhoidal salmonellosis (NTS) is usually self-limiting, with symptoms resolving within a week. However, it can be life-threatening for immunocompromised individuals, young children, and the elderly. Multidrug-resistant strains are a growing problem in developing countries. Typhoidal serotypes, on the other hand, cause typhoid fever, a severe illness with high mortality rates if untreated. These infections are characterized by a slow rise in fever, abdominal pain, and a rash, with an incubation period of 1 to 3 weeks. Typhoid fever is rare in developed nations but remains a major health threat in poorer regions, especially for children.
