The High Stakes of Australia's Largest Natural Gas Supplier
In short: Santos Limited isn't just a corporate giant; it is the backbone of Australia's energy grid. From powering eastern states to navigating intense legal battles over carbon emissions and indigenous rights, its operations sit at the volatile intersection of industrial necessity and environmental preservation.
Incorporated in 1954 as South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search, Santos has evolved into Australia's largest natural gas supplier. The company operates a vast network of assets, including LNG plants in the Cooper Basin and South West Queensland, which provide essential energy to the eastern states. Its reach extends globally, with interests in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The company's growth has been marked by massive acquisitions and strategic pivots. Following a $2.15 billion purchase of Quadrant Energy during 2018, the firm spent US$1.265 billion (with an extra $200 million conditional fee) to buy ConocoPhillips' Timor-Leste and northern Australia holdings in May 2020. These moves secured control over aging offshore assets and the Darwin LNG plant, positioning Santos as a dominant player in both domestic and international markets.
However, this dominance comes with significant scrutiny. Santos has been criticized for high greenhouse gas emissions—leading to its inclusion on a 2020 list of Australia's 65 worst emitters—and for lobbying efforts. A primary point of contention is the Barossa project in the Timor Sea. Opponents have branded it an "emissions factory" because it is expected to generate 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of LNG, despite aims to replenish fading reserves at the Bayu-Undan site.
The company also faces complex legal and social hurdles. In 2022, a court dismissed Santos' environmental plan for the Barossa field following claims from traditional owners regarding inadequate consultation and threats to turtle nesting areas. This forced the company to disconnect its drilling rig in October 2022. Despite these challenges, Santos remains a central figure in Australia's energy landscape, currently aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040.
