From oil exploration to fuel distribution: the evolution of Sunoco
In short: Sunoco began in 1886 as a natural gas company before becoming a global energy giant. Today, it has pivoted away from refining and production to focus on midstream infrastructure and fuel distribution across more than 40 U.S. states.
The company's history is marked by rapid diversification and strategic rebranding. Originally founded as The Peoples Natural Gas Company in Pittsburgh, the partnership expanded into oil discoveries in Ohio and Pennsylvania in 1886. By 1902, it chartered a refining company in Texas to tap into the Spindletop field. Throughout the 20th century, the brand cycled through several names, including Sun Oil Company (1890–1976) and Sun Company Inc. (1976–1998), before adopting its current name as a contraction of the original title.
A major turning point occurred in 2011 when Sunoco announced it would exit the crude oil refining business, citing high costs—potentially up to $2.7 billion—and volatility in crude prices. This shift was punctuated by the closure of its Marcus Hook facility and the demolition of its Eagle Point refinery in New Jersey. The company pivoted toward becoming a distributor, currently moving over 8 billion U.S. gallons of fuel annually. Its infrastructure now includes approximately 14,000 miles of pipeline and over 100 terminals.
Sunoco's market presence is particularly dominant in Pennsylvania, where it operates more than 800 gas stations—over triple the amount held by its nearest competitor, ExxonMobil. While it remains a major player in retail fuel sales, it ranks second only to the convenience store chain Sheetz in that specific state. The company also maintains a significant presence in Hawaii under the Aloha Petroleum brand and holds a long-term fuel supply agreement with 7-Eleven following a $3.2 billion divestment of its non-core convenience store operations in 2018.
