In short: In manufacturing, finding a defect after it is made is expensive and wasteful. Instead of inspecting finished goods, pioneers like Walter Shewhart developed a method to monitor the process itself, catching subtle shifts in stability before a single sub-standard product ever leaves the line.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) shifts the focus from post-production inspection to early detection. While traditional inspection identifies errors after they occur, SPC uses tools like control charts to observe process performance in real time. The goal is to distinguish between two types of variation: 'common' and 'special'. Common variation is the natural, stable, and predictable fluctuation inherent to any process. Special variation, however, stems from unpredictable, intermittent factors—such as a sudden machine malfunction—that push a process out of statistical control.

The foundations of this discipline were laid in the 1920s at Bell Laboratories by Walter A. Shewhart. In 1924, he introduced the control chart and the concept of a state of statistical control. This work was later expanded by figures like W. Edwards Deming, who helped train American industry during World War II, and George D. Edwards, who consulted for Army Ordnance. The methodology proved so effective in munitions manufacturing that it became a cornerstone of modern industrial quality management.

Today, the scope of SPC has expanded far beyond the factory floor. It is now a recommended practice within the UK's National Health Service and is used in fields ranging from financial auditing to IT operations. Even in the era of Industry 4.0, SPC remains vital for monitoring complex, automated systems. Emerging research even applies these techniques to artificial neural networks, using multivariate control charts to detect 'concept drift' or unreliable behavior in AI models, ensuring that even the most advanced machine learning systems remain stable and trustworthy.
