A fantasy epic that hides a secret science-fiction future
In short: What begins as a magical tale of tribal warfare and masked heroes eventually shifts into a profound science-fiction odyssey. This transformation defines the Utawarerumono franchise, a series that evolved from a 2002 adult visual novel into a sprawling multimedia saga spanning anime, manga, and tactical role-playing games.
The franchise began in April 2002 with a Windows release by Leaf and Aquaplus. The narrative follows Hakuowlo, an amnesiac man wearing an unremovable mask, who is rescued by a family in a forest. After leading a rebellion against an oppressive ruler, Hakuowlo founds the nation of Tuskur, named after the grandmother of the girl who saved him.
While the story initially presents as a fantasy world populated by magical beings and new human species, it later reveals a startling truth: the setting is actually Earth's distant future. This shift from fantasy to science-fiction is a hallmark of the series' storytelling, adding layers of complexity to the protagonist's journey and the world's history.
The gameplay is a hybrid of visual novel elements and tactical role-playing. Players navigate dialogue-heavy scenes where choices influence the order of events rather than the final outcome. In battle, players move characters across a square-based grid to meet objectives, such as defeating specific enemy counts or reaching certain locations. Success in these tactical encounters allows characters to earn battle points to increase their abilities.
Over two decades, the series has expanded significantly. Following the original, sequels like Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth were released on various platforms including PlayStation 3, 4, and Vita. The franchise has also seen spin-offs like the hack and slash title Zan, and various manga adaptations, cementing its status as a diverse multimedia property.
