Turkey's ambitious leap into the electric vehicle market
In short: In 2018, a new consortium emerged to transform Turkey's automotive landscape. Aiming to move beyond historical brands like Anadol, Togg is building a massive ecosystem for electric mobility, from high-tech SUVs to domestic lithium-ion battery production.
Togg, an acronym for Türkiye'nin Otomobili Girişim Grubu, was established in 2018 as a joint venture between five Turkish companies: Anadolu Group, BMC, Kök Group, Turkcell, and Zorlu Holding. Backed by TOBB and the Turkish state, this entity seeks to create a revolutionary mobility network powered by domestic industrial property.
The company's manufacturing strategy is centered in Gemlik, Bursa, where a production plant was inaugurated on 29 October 2022. This facility, built at a cost of ₺22 billion, is located on 400 hectares of land owned by the Turkish Armed Forces. To support its electric vehicle lineup, Togg established Siro, a joint venture with the Chinese company Farasis, to manufacture lithium-ion batteries near Ankara.
The brand's flagship model, the T10X SUV, features design elements inspired by Turkish culture, such as a tulip-shaped grille and tulip-patterned seat stitching. The vehicle is available in two configurations: a rear-wheel drive model with a 160 kW motor and an all-wheel drive version featuring a second 320 kW engine on the front axle. While electric vehicle sales in Turkey were less than 1% in June 2022, the market saw a significant shift, reaching nearly 18% by 2025.
Looking toward 2030, Togg intends to expand its portfolio to five different models and aims to export one million vehicles to European markets. This expansion follows the unveiling of the T10F fastback sedan at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
