How a Japanese tuning legend rose from an oil crisis to racing dominance
In short: Born from the volatility of the 1970s oil crisis, TOM'S has evolved from a specialized tuning shop into a global motorsport powerhouse. From engineering unbuilt Formula 1 concepts to dominating Japanese championships, the company's history is a masterclass in precision engineering and relentless competitive success.
Established in 1974 by Nobuhide Tachi and Kiyoshi Oiwa, TOM'S (Tachi Oiwa Motor Sport) began its journey during a challenging period defined by a global oil crisis. Despite these economic headwinds, the founders secured support from Toyota, allowing them to develop motorsports technology effectively. By 1975, Toyota Motor Corporation had officially recognized the firm as an authorized tuning shop, setting the stage for decades of high-performance engineering. Following their official recognition, the firm established a garage in Tokyo's Tama district in 1978. By 1981, they had expanded their expertise into the Japanese Formula 3 scene as engine tuners.
The company's ambitions reached a peak in 1992 when it attempted to bring Toyota into Formula 1. This massive undertaking included a feasibility study and the creation of a 40,000 square foot research and development center, with the design overseen by the renowned John Barnard. Although a specific car, the 011F, was designed during this period, the project never moved beyond the design phase as Toyota ultimately rejected the entry.
Beyond its experimental ventures, TOM'S has maintained a dominant presence in Japanese racing. They have achieved significant success in the Super Formula Lights series, securing a record 25 championships across various eras, including a recent streak from 2020 through 2024. In the Super GT series, the team has claimed the GT500 Class Championship eleven times, with victories spanning from 1997 through to 2025. This sustained excellence has made them a cornerstone of Toyota and Lexus performance tuning. Their competitive reach extends to the Macau Grand Prix, where they secured five victories. Additionally, the team has achieved notable success in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship, winning a title in 1992.
