How a city car survived by moving up the ladder
In short: Small cars are becoming expensive to build because of strict safety and emissions rules. To survive, Toyota didn't just make a new hatchback; they fundamentally re-engineered the Aygo into a premium crossover, swapping its old DNA for a more sophisticated platform and hybrid power.
The evolution of the Toyota Aygo X represents a strategic pivot in response to shifting European regulations. As emissions and safety requirements became increasingly stringent, producing small A-segment cars became less economically viable, leading to dwindling sales. This forced a major shift: Toyota ended its joint venture with PSA Group for small city cars and decided to develop an Aygo successor based on the more robust B-segment Yaris platform.
The new model, introduced in 2022, is built on a shortened version of the GA-B platform. This marks a significant departure from the first two generations of the Aygo produced between 2005 and 2022. To position it as a higher-end vehicle, Toyota adopted the 'Cross' designation—pronounced like its Yaris and Corolla siblings—to define it as a crossover rather than a traditional hatchback.
The vehicle underwent a major transformation during its 2025 facelift. This update replaced the original 1.0-litre petrol engine with a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid system, featuring a unique interior layout where battery cells are installed side-by-side to maximize cabin space for the first time in a Toyota hybrid. It also introduced high-tech upgrades like an infrared sensor for driver attention monitoring and software-over-the-air updates for its safety features.
The transition from a basic city car to a premium crossover highlights a broader trend in automotive manufacturing: when regulatory costs rise, manufacturers often move 'upmarket' within the same category. By leveraging the Yaris platform and hybrid technology, Toyota ensured the Aygo nameplate could remain relevant in a market where small-scale production is no longer sustainable.
