The Toyota Belta: A subcompact sedan with a beautiful Italian name
In short: Launched in Japan in 2005, the Belta was a subcompact sedan designed to maximize interior space. While it shares underpinnings with the Vitz hatchback, it was designed by Toyota's Japanese studio for different demographics. Interestingly, its name is a contraction of the Italian phrase for 'beautiful people'.
The Toyota Belta debuted in Japan on 28 November 2005, offering several engine options including a 1.0 L 1KR-FE straight-three and two 1.3 L inline-four variants. In international markets, it was often marketed as the Vios or the Yaris sedan. While the Belta and the Vitz hatchback share the same platform and powertrain, they were designed by different studios: the Vitz at Toyota's French studio, Toyota ED², and the Belta at the Japanese TMC Design Division.
Despite sharing underpinnings, the Belta and Vitz share no sheetmetal. The Belta was engineered with a drag coefficient of Cd=0.29, making it marginally more aerodynamic than its hatchback counterpart. To standardize design across left and right-hand drive markets, Toyota utilized a centralized dashboard design for both models, though cosmetic differences remained.
The Belta's lifecycle saw significant regional shifts. In Japan, it was discontinued in June 2012 and replaced by the E160 series Corolla Axio. In North America, it was dropped in July 2015 to make way for the Mazda2 sedan-based Scion iA/Yaris sedan. The nameplate saw a revival in November 2021, when it was used for a rebadged Suzuki Ciaz sold in Africa.
The vehicle's versatility was reflected in its diverse global presence. In Southeast Asia, it was known as the second generation Vios, which was introduced in Malaysia on 5 October 2007. In Indonesia, the Vios was marketed with the backronym 'Very Intelligent, Outstanding Sedan!' and offered in Limo, E, and G trims.
