In short: Launched in 1996, the XV20 Camry was more than just a reliable commuter. It was a complex global project that spanned multiple brands, from the luxury-oriented Vienta in Australia to the flagship Daihatsu Altis in Japan, all while navigating shifting tax laws and intense design competitions.

The XV20 series, representing the fourth generation of the Camry outside Japan, was the result of a highly accelerated development cycle. Following a design competition, Kawazu Masahiko's winning proposal, known as proposal "C", was selected in August 1993. This allowed Toyota to freeze the final design by early February 1994, more than 30 months before the scheduled production start in August 1996.

This generation was notable for its diverse global identities. In Japan, it was sold as the Camry Gracia, while an upmarket wagon version was marketed as the Toyota Mark II Qualis. It also marked the first time a Camry was badge-engineered as a Daihatsu; the Daihatsu Altis, introduced in March 2000, was an identical sedan to the export Camry. In Australia, the luxury-oriented versions were badged as the Toyota Vienta.

Engine choices for the modular XV20 included a 3.0-liter V6 and a 2.2-liter inline-four. North American markets saw the sedan debut in 1996 for the 1997 model year; meanwhile, Japanese owners faced greater taxes because the vehicle's width and length grew to 1,795 mm, exceeding local size constraints. This forced a divergence from the narrower Vista, which remained 1,700 mm wide and eventually evolved into the Corolla.

Performance and safety also saw significant updates. In 1999, North American models received a mid-model upgrade featuring larger four-bulb headlights and a separated grille. Safety-wise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the model a "Good" score in frontal offset crash tests, and Euro NCAP gave it a four out of five star rating, aided by the introduction of optional side torso airbags in 1999 models.
