Why Ghana rejected a regional university to build its own
In short: In 1948, a pivotal decision shaped West African education. Rather than accepting a shared colonial university in Nigeria, the people of the Gold Coast demanded their own institution. This move birthed the University of Ghana, establishing a foundation for national identity and independent research.
The origins of the University of Ghana are rooted in a specific geopolitical rejection. Following recommendations by the Asquith Commission on Higher Education in the Colonies, there was a proposal to establish a single university college for the entire British West Africa region, with the campus located in Nigeria. The people of the Gold Coast rejected this plan, insisting instead on an institution within their own borders.
This advocacy led to the founding of the University College of the Gold Coast on August 11, 1948, via Ordinance. Degrees were conferred and curricula managed by the University of London, which first hosted the institution as a partner college. The institution underwent several identity shifts: it became the University College of Ghana after independence in 1957, and finally attained full university status and degree-awarding powers in 1961.
Today, as the oldest and largest public university in Ghana, it operates on a collegiate system with a student population exceeding 38,000. It has evolved from its original focus on Liberal Arts and Medicine to include technology-based and vocational courses. The university now prioritizes international research collaborations in four key areas: Malaria Research, Climate Change Adaptation, Food Production, and Development Policy.
The institution's visual identity reflects these values of integrity and strength through Adinkra symbols. The 'AYA' (fern) denotes honesty and rectitude on its emblem, while 'DWENINMENTOASO' (joined ram horns) signifies power plus an urge for honest living.
