How a bustling colonial capital transformed into Ghana’s premier center for higher education
In short: Once the administrative heart of the Gold Coast, Cape Coast evolved from a strategic European trading post into an intellectual hub. Though its harbor eventually faded into history, the city reinvented itself through its schools and universities, securing a lasting legacy that transcends its origins as a colonial stronghold.
The story of Cape Coast begins long before European arrival, rooted in the Fetu Kingdom. Indigenous inhabitants, primarily Fante, established a market center known as Gua or Oguaa, meaning market. By the 15th century, Portuguese navigators arrived, naming the site Cabo Corso, or short cape, which the British later corrupted into Cape Coast. The town’s strategic position on the Gulf of Guinea made it a focal point for international trade, eventually leading to the construction of Cape Coast Castle in 1655 by the Swedish, which later became a British stronghold.
For decades, the town served as the commercial and administrative capital of the Gold Coast, a status it held until 1877 when the capital moved to Accra. This shift, combined with the development of railways connecting inland regions like Kumasi to ports in Sekondi and later Tema, triggered a long economic decline. The once-thriving roadstead port saw its maritime importance vanish entirely by 1962, forcing the city to pivot away from its reliance on trade and colonial administration.
In the wake of these changes, Cape Coast successfully rebranded itself as an educational powerhouse. The establishment of the University of Cape Coast in 1962 and various secondary institutions solidified its reputation as a center for learning. Today, the city balances this academic identity with its historical significance, housing government offices within the walls of the old castle and maintaining its role as a cultural landmark, while producing goods ranging from textiles and soap to salt and chemicals.
